What a Year!

Father’s Day this year will be extra special (for most if not all dads) namely since vaccinations came into the picture. We can now actually hug one another and not be fearful we will kill each other. How great is that!

The past year and a half have been filled with so many emotions. I don’t know about you but between fearing covid, traveling during covid, learning my daughter GOT covid at college, not to mention families struggling to navigate through the new terms of parenting while working from home with kids out of school at the same time, I don’t know how I didn’t have a nervous breakdown. Talk about the shit hitting the fan. School closings, supermarket clean outs, toilet paper shortages…man looking back on all of that it seems hard to imagine any of it was real. I mean you can’t write that stuff. Couple that with the nightmare of the former presidential administration and it’s a wonder any of us came out of this past year alive.

So this Father’s Day I’m going to rejoice even more since it seems we are experiencing a complete 180 between the new president, the falling numbers of covid and most of all the fact that we can resume the simple act of hugging and sharing love for one another by human contact. Life is good!

Coming out of a year and a half of isolation is a bit more challenging than I thought. I’ve gotten used to the fact that I can hide behind my mask when I’m out in public (although that is soon coming to a close since the mask mandate ends June 15th. Today, in fact!) I still have work to do on this part.

No more wiping down groceries with alcohol wipes! Adios to plastic gloves constantly ripping as I attempt to cover my hands. It’s amazing how much was taken for granted before covid hit the scene.

As I ponder what I would like for this Father’s Day, I can’t only think of one thing…spending quality time with my wife and kids. So much has happened this past year and a half that I can’t think of needing anything superficial. I want to hang onto the fact that life is delicate and things can change in an instant.

So many Father’s were lost this past year, way before their time. This coming Father’s Day will not only be a time of celebrating that special dad in your life, but also mourning the loss of that dad that left too soon due to covid.

As you look to celebrate Father’s Day this year, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the past year and a half and consider those who lost their dad to the unfortunate virus that took the world by storm. Life is precious and should always be celebrated. So celebrate your dad this year with a hug and a kiss and let him know how special it is to share this particular Father’s Day.
